Mitochondrial Changes Induced by Iron Absorption in the Duodenal Absorptive Cells of Rats
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ten young albino rats of Wistar strain were used for this experiment. For 94 hours prior to the experiment all of the animals were put into narrow cages to prevent coprophagia and received nothing but distilled water. Ferrous chloride was obtained by reduction from ferric chloride with ascorbic acid just before administration. About 0.5 ml of the solution containing 3 mg of iron was infused into the stomach of eight rats through a polyethylene tube. Two rats were sacrificed after 30 minutes, 1, 2, and 3 hours, respectively. Another two rats were killed as control without receiving iron solution. Specimens of the duodenum approximately 2 cm distal to the pyloric ring were fixed in buffered 1 per cent osmium tetroxide (pH 7.4) with sucrose added, and then dehydrated in alcohol, embedded in Epon, and sectioned with a Porter-Blum microtome. Most thin sections were stained with uranyl acetate, and w e r e examined by a Hitachi HU-11A type electron microscope. O B S E R V A T I O N S

Mitochondrial Changes Induced by Potassium and Sodium in the Duodenal Absorptive Cell as Studied with the Electron Microscope
Duodenal absorptive cells from animals fed large amounts of sodium or potassium contain many mitochondria with internal granules. Many mitochondrial granules are also present in cells which transport large amounts of cation. The hypothesis is advanced that the mitochondrial granule represents cation segregated within the mitochondrion. A mechanism is suggested for the segregation of excessive i...
متن کاملThe Ultrastructural Changes of the Sertoli and Leydig Cells Following Streptozotocin Induced Diabetes
Objective(s) This investigation was conducted to evaluate the effects of diabetes on the structure and function of testicular tissue. Materials and Methods Diabetes was induced in male adult rats by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. Body and testicular weight, hormonal analyses, histological and ultrastructural analyses were measured. Results The body and testicular we...
متن کاملCadmium induces anemia through interdependent progress of hemolysis, body iron accumulation, and insufficient erythropoietin production in rats.
Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal and distributed widely in the environment. In addition to damaging the liver, kidneys, and bone, cadmium causes anemia through hemolysis, iron deficiency, and insufficient erythropoietin (EPO) production (renal anemia) along with changes in iron metabolism. Here, we investigated the role of iron in the interdependent progress of three types of anemia in cadmium-in...

CORTELL, STANLEY, AND MARCEL E. CONRAD. E@ct ofendotoxin on iron a6sm$hon. Am. J* Physiol. 2 13(1) : 43-47, 1967. -Endotoxin caused marked abnormalities in iron absorption and metabolism within hours after the administration of a parenteral dose. The changes observed during the 1st day following injection were unique; there was decreased absorption of iron with a normal intestinal iron content,...
متن کاملتأثیر تغذیه با آهن و مخمر تک سلولی غنی شده با کروم زیستی بر فاکتورهای خونی در رت نر دیابتی شده با استرپتوزوتوسین
Background: Chrome is regarded as an essential nutrient required for glucose and lipid metabolism, specifically in diabetic patients. Converting mineral form of chromium to organic as well as increasing its absorption seem to have more fruitful therapeutic effects due to the synergistic effect of these two anti-diabetes compounds(yeast and chromium). Therefore, the present study aimed to evalu...
